About Miina

My main focus in permaculture is garden and nature, since I am a landcape architect by profession. The first time I consciously worked with permaculture ethics was in 2009 when I was making a design about urban agriculture at the university. But like for many others, the ethics have always been in my life, I just haven’t thought of them as permaculture. In my work I mostly design gardens & other outdoor areas. With two of my friends, we have also edited and translated into Finnish two Swedish permaculture books: one about perennial vegetables and other about forrest gardens. I am also doing some teaching around those subjects.

Me and my family have a suburban homestead in Helsinki, where we practice permaculture in our everyday life. We are repairing & mending items, foraging wild mushrooms & herbs and finding ways to use resource flows around us not to be wasted.

Our aim is to develop our 50’s garden and house to be a regenerative system and we have been working towards it since 2013 when we moved here. In our food production we are mainly focusing on perennial crops, nutrient cycles, water balance and taking care of the biodiversity. We also have a small backyard nursery where we grow and sell seedlings/plants of perennial vegetables, which are otherwise hard to find here. As a family of five, we have arranged our lives so that we don’t need to have a car, and cargobikes are filling most of our transportations needs.

Building a sense of community is also one of my interest. Over the years I have attended in the activity of a local community garden for several growing seasons and with some neighbours we are facilitating local mending meetings in our area.

We meet in Turi, a smaller town in the middle of Estonia, at the community house called Konn, which means frog. And for sure there are many frogs here. That’s probably because of the lowlands and the river. We have even seen two storks´ nest with chicks. The town of...
